Judith Davidoff, a native of Boston, Massachusetts, is the Consort’s artistic director. During her seven years as a member of Noah Greenberg's New York Pro Musica she formed a viol consort, which was established as the New York Consort of Viols in 1972. Her activities as a recitalist, teacher, lecturer and researcher have taken her to Brazil, Israel, Sweden, Taiwan and Turkey as well as to many campuses and performance centers in North America. She is on the early music faculties of Columbia Teachers College and Sarah Lawrence College. She is the cellist of the Arioso Trio and a founding member of Music For A While. A frequent viol soloist in the Passions of J.S. Bach, she performed in the St. Matthew and St. John Passions with the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur. She was recently honored with the “Special Early Music Outreach Award” by Early Music America. Her recorded performances on early fiddles, viol and cello reflect her wide repertoire and range of performance styles, from the Play of Herod to Verklaerte Nacht. She is the author of an annotated catalogue of 20th-century music for/including the viola da gamba.
